Town house in Mělník
Central Bohemia region / 2024
Husova Street in Mělník is a silent witness to the many stories and changes that the city has experienced over the centuries. This corner of the city, full of historic houses with an unmistakable charm, hides countless stories in its streets, which are reflected in every facade, in every detail. Among these historic buildings stands an inconspicuous house that will undergo a major renovation that will not only restore its historical appearance, but also create a modern and functional space that will respond to the needs of current and future life.
The original house, a single-storey structure with an attic, cellar and part of the historical underground, has undergone various construction interventions over the years. It is now adapted to current and future housing needs, while sensitively preserving or restoring the historical values that define the appearance and atmosphere of this part of the city. The main concept of the design was therefore a response to the historical context.
One of the greatest benefits of the reconstruction is the new, thoughtful layout that respects the original structure of the house, but at the same time provides the comfort of modern living. The house has two levels of basement, ground floor and attic. This allowed for the creation of spacious and functional zones for the various needs of its residents.
The ground floor of the house has a commercial space, which, thanks to its orientation to the street, creates ideal conditions for an office and a surgery. This part offers not only privacy for work activities, but also the possibility of direct contact with clients, which gives the house a multifunctional character.
On the other hand, the family part of the house, or rather its social space - an arched entrance hall with a cloakroom, a generous living room with a dining room and a kitchen - is oriented towards the courtyard. This part of the house is the heart of family life, open, bright and airy. With direct access to the terrace and the garden below. This new, sensitive connection allows a smooth transition between the indoor and outdoor space and special emphasis was placed on it. Creating a smooth relationship between the indoor and outdoor space was key to the overall comfort and atmosphere of the house. The connection to the terrace, green areas, trees and flowers allows for relaxation in the fresh air and at the same time creates a cozy environment for family moments.
The attic of the house houses the private part of the family living space. The study, bedroom, dressing rooms and the back room offer peace and intimacy, which is separated from the social part of the house. Sloping ceilings with windows overlooking the street and dormers oriented to the courtyard ensure plenty of daylight and a pleasant, cozy atmosphere.
The basement, which used to be more of a technical facility, has been extended to become a modern multifunctional space. The newly created gym and technical facilities are the ideal complement to the active life of the family. This space not only provides enough space for sports, but also for storage and technological facilities, giving the house another dimension that supports the comfort of its residents.
The renovation of the street facade was another key element of the overall concept, as this element of the house significantly shapes its relationship to the urban development. The facade's bossage, the division of windows with fine details, and the original entrance were carefully restored. The courtyard facade, thanks to the modified openings, newly created roof dormers, and the addition of a cellar, has acquired a completely new face, adequate to the street facade.
Thanks to all the interventions, the house has regained its historical charm and acquired its current one. The town house in Mělník now offers modern comfort without losing its charm and historical authenticity.
