Embankment apartment
Prague / 2024
The reconstruction of the apartment on the waterfront was focused primarily on the interior design. That is, the placement of built-in furniture in the context of the new arrangement of individual rooms, the layout of the kitchen, the selection of solitaire furniture, lighting elements and surface materials. The main qualities of the apartment are its generous rooms with high ceilings, views of the opposite waterfront with the “golden chapel” building, the orientation of the bedrooms to the quiet courtyard and historical craft elements in the form of cassette door and window frames.
The original cassettes were the main inspiration for the concept of the details of the newly designed built-in furniture in all rooms. It is provided with facets on the vertical and horizontal edges of the bodies. Cassettes with a surface of oak lacquered veneer, golden perforated sheet metal, artificial stone, or upholstery with distinctively colored velvet are then inserted into these subtle, interconnected frames. This solution unifies all the interventions in the apartment into one conceptual whole. Each room has a slightly different atmosphere thanks to the different use of materials and accessories.
The living room has a new, generous bookcase with storage space, covering one entire wall. Opposite it, a generous ballet-themed canvas dominates the room. The furniture consists of a leather sofa with an armchair and a velvet solitaire “Loos” armchair. The room is complemented by reading lamps and a “chandelier” consisting of three voluminous wire lamps, anchored in large, custom-made circular canopies.
The dining room with kitchen has a newly designed layout. The kitchen unit with a hidden pantry occupies the back of the room and is dominated by a large island, which also serves as a bar. The furniture facets are also used on the white worktop made of artificial stone. The division of the room into the dining room and the kitchen, in addition to the island, is further enhanced by different lighting fixtures. The dining room, i.e. the front, illuminated part with windows, is equipped with a distinctive custom-made dining table from ORA and complemented by a second canvas with ballet shoes. Thanks to the large opening, it is then more connected to the living room.
The bedroom is equipped with built-in wardrobes, which form a portal around the entrance door. Under the arch of the wall, behind the comfortable bed, there is a large headboard - folded panels upholstered in azure velvet. The chandelier is made up of three paper lantern lights and the additional lights are designed in the same spirit.
The study is divided into two zones in height. The lower zone is a study with storage spaces in built-in furniture. It is equipped with a custom-made table and a comfortable ottoman for moments of relaxation and is complemented by a canvas, closing a ballet triptych. The upper zone with a floor, accessible by a ladder, is designed for occasional overnight guests.
The entrance hall, cloakroom and social facilities remained without major changes and were equipped with new furniture, accessories and lighting.
A waterfront apartment is a place where the old and the new blend in peaceful harmony.
